In Mexico, tacos don't have lettuce on them. Or tomatoes, Or cheese. Authentic tacos are filled with high-quality marinated meats (or vegetables), & are delicious as they are. They don't need extra trimmings that you find on less traditional tacos.

The difference between street tacos and regular tacos is that street tacos are smaller in size and made with a corn tortilla. Street tacos got their name from the place of their origin, the streets of Mexico. Mexican migrants that worked on mines and farms would wrap their tortillas around meat to eat on the go.

According to one etymological theory, the culinary origin of the term "taco" in Mexico can be traced to its employment, among Mexican silver miners, as a term signifying "plug." The miners used explosive charges in plug form, consisting of a paper wrapper and gunpowder filling.
